Modified Legend Will Cagle to Race Legends Dirt Modified

Charlotte, N.C. (8/9/2011) - - 73 year old Will Cagle will most likely be the most experienced driver in the field this Saturday when  the green flag drops for the next event on the LiquiFix Legends Dirt Modified Series Schedule. Cagle’s name is one that is legendary in the racing community. He has amassed over 900 feature wins since he started racing in the 1960s, and now he’ll try his hand racing the new Legends Dirt Modified developed by Ray Evernham.

The majority of those 900 wins came racing dirt modifieds in the Northeastern United States. However, Cagle has experience on both asphalt and dirt, and has raced everything from Sprint Cars and Late Models to USAC Champ Cars. He even competed at Daytona in the now defunct NASCAR Permatex Series - held by some to be an early predecessor to what is now the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Racing success has found Cagle from the very first time he took the green flag.

“I suppose the very first race I ever ran was a soap box derby and I won. The coolest thing about that race is that Buzzie Reutimann (father of current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Reutimann), who I ended up racing with throughout my career, was in that race as well”, says Cagle.

While he won in his first race ever, he also faired quite well the last time he was behind the wheel. Cagle, a fan and supporter of Legend Car racing, competed for several years in the Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His last race was the Master’s Division of the prestigious Legends Million race. At 71 years of age, Cagle started 16th and finished 3rd in the event.

An early pioneer of the sport, Cagle holds a number of track championships to his name. However, Cagle’s contributions to racing don’t stop in the driver’s seat. He and his family promoted and managed the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, NY from 1986 - 1997.
Saturday will be Cagle’s first start at East Lincoln Speedway, a 3/8 mile clay oval owned by former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief and owner Ray Evernham. While it may be his first time behind the wheel at East Lincoln, it will not be Cagle’s first visit to the track. The dirt racing legend was on hand in 2009 when the track hosted the Legends Dirt Nationals.

Cagle will pilot the #18 Legends Dirt Modified, which was driven by Ralph Sheheen and Jeff Hammond earlier this year. Cagle will not be the first dirt racing standout to race a Legends Dirt modified at East Lincoln Speedway in 2011. Long-time Northeastern dirt racer Tommy Corellis won the first race of the season, and currently sits second in the point standings. Corellis and Cagle go way back, and this Saturday’s race will be the first time they’ve competed against each other in many years. Cagle and Corellis met at Lebanon Valley in the 1960s while racing the big 100 lap open races. Over the years, they became friends, and Corellis even purchased a couple of racecars from Cagle. They are both looking forward to sharing the track again.

The Legends Dirt Modified is an affordable, open-wheel dirt track car that was developed by Ray Evernham and is manufactured by US Legend Cars International in Harrisburg, NC. The car is easy to maintain, yet challenging to drive. The fun, new car is a great way for new drivers and veteran racers to compete side-by-side.

The gates at East Lincoln Speedway open at 5:00 p.m., with racing beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be the sixth race of 2011 for the LiquiFix U.S. Legends Dirt Modified Series, which is racing in its inaugural season.
