Evernham Wins Inaugural Championship

October 1, 2011 - Tommy Corellis, Willy Evernham and Mark Lowrey all had championship aspirations on their minds as the LiquiFix U.S. Legends Dirt Modified Series headed into its final points event of its inaugural season. The stage was set as the three drivers took to the track for a pair of feature races. Corellis held a twelve point lead over Evernham and a twenty-seven point lead over Lowrey heading into the afternoon. Each driver knew that a championship would not come easy as this talented trio has combined to win seven feature races this year.

Evernham showed in style as he was able to win both feature races en route to winning the championship by a margin of eight points over Corellis. Trouble found Corellis in the first feature race as he was forced to pit to remove a nerf bar that was rubbing his rear tire. By virtue of the tow drivers' finishes in feature race #1, Evernham moved to within three points of Corellis - meaning that whichever driver finished higher in the final race of the season would be crowned the champion. While Corellis spent much of the second feature race on Evernham's bumper, he was passed by Danny Bohn in the closing laps of the race and finished fourth. Trouble found Corellis in the first feature race as he was forced to pit to remove a nerf bar that was rubbing his rear tire.

A scarry moment occurred in the first feature of the afternoon as Evan York flipped and barrel-rolled in turn three after touching wheels with Late Model star Chris Ferguson. York would walk away from the incident okay. The car showed its durability as York's crew was able to make enough repairs on his No. 3 machine for him to return to the track for the second feature race of the day.
